It was an early morning in April, the kind of morning that feels like a secret between you and the city. The sun had just begun to rise over Parliament Hill, casting this dreamy, golden light across downtown Ottawa. A soft layer of snow blanketed the ground — one last whisper of winter — and it shimmered gently in the morning glow. In Major’s Hill Park, the geese were gathering, their calls echoing above the quiet, sleepy streets. It felt like the first true sign that spring was beginning to stir.
This was the perfect backdrop for portraits of Olivia and Zach — an easygoing, funny, and genuinely sweet couple whose Winter wedding is planned for early next year. We met just as the sky started to blush pink and gold, near Château Laurier. There’s something magical about shooting at sunrise – everything feels a little slower, a little more intimate.
I took a mostly documentary approach for this engagement shoot in downtown Ottawa, following them as they wandered through the snow, laughing, dancing, and occasionally breaking into what I think was an interpretive squat dance (though I’m pretty sure I’m remembering that part slightly wrong!). We talked about the ridiculousness of April snow, our shared love of Weezer, and just enjoyed the quiet charm of the moment.
I’m already looking forward to their wedding day. If this morning was any indication, the celebration is going to be full of joy, music, and probably more interpretive dance moves.
As I edited the photos, Billie Holiday’s voice kept floating through my mind:
“There’s frost in Central Park
At five it’s almost dark
What’s the difference
When you’ve heard love’s sweet amend
There’s snowflakes in the sky
And geese are flying high
But there’s April in my heart again”April in my heart – Billie Holiday
